Crawford Ninth in Milano Cortina Opening Downhill

Calgary, AB. (February 7, 2026) — As is tradition at Olympic Winter Games the men’s downhill was the first medal event today at Milano Cortina 2026 racing on the Stelvio slope in Bormio, one of the most technical and spectacular tracks in the world. James Crawford (Toronto, ON) raced to ninth today to extend his Olympic Winter Games top 10 finishes streak to four races.

Competing in his third Games, today’s result comes after Crawford won a bronze medal in alpine combined at Beijing 2022.

“It was a good day. This is one of my favourite tracks and favourite places to be” said Crawford. “I’ve been struggling a little bit to find confidence in my skiing and today I finally brought a level that could’ve won the race but I made a few mistakes that cost me a shot at a medal.”

“It’s Bormio, it’s one of the hardest, if not the hardest track on the circuit. I made a mistake in the middle of the course and it killed all of my speed. On this course, in that section, it’s a bad place to make a mistake. But I’m feeling good and looking to bring the same approach and the same skiing to the super-G in a few days.”

Cameron Alexander (North Vancouver, BC), in first Olympic Games start, on a track where he has finished third in the last two World Cup downhill races in 2023 and 2024 was 14th today.

“A little bit disappointed in the result today but happy with what I put into this and sometimes it just doesn’t go your way,” said Alexander. “I had a couple of spots where I lost some speed today and that cost me. My skiing is in a really good spot and I feel good coming into the super-G. It’s nice to have another race to have a shot at a medal.”
