Canadian championships 2014

ABOUT

Who: During March and April, the national alpine, para-alpine and ski cross teams take on up-and-coming athletes from the provincial and club level as well as some international competitors.

What’s at stake: For Canadian team members, winning the national championship carries prestige, but for aspiring World Cup competitors, performing well at Canadians offers an opportunity to improve their International Ski Federation (FIS) points. It can also be a stepping stone to the national team. Canadian championship rankings are also an important bench-marking tool for athletes.

History

The first Canadian championships were held at Mount Royal in Montreal in 1921, where cross-country skiing and ski jumping were the main events. Nordic races dominated the championships — which were originally called the Dominion Ski Championships — until 1929, when alpine skiing was introduced for the first time.

From 1929-1936, slalom was the only alpine event run. Frank Campbell was the first Canadian to win the slalom in 1932. A category for female alpine racers was created in 1935, and downhill and giant slalom races were added in 1937. Since then, the Canadian championships have been won by some of Canada’s most famous ski racers like Nancy Greene, Ken Read, Jim Hunter, and Steve Podborski, and modern stars like Thomas Grandi and Erik Guay.

Although the frequency of the championships originally varied — sometimes running every year, sometimes with multiple years between races — and included a number of alpine and nordic disciplines, in modern times nordic and alpine disciplines separately host their own Canadian championships every two years. Alpine Canada racers compete in the Alpine Canadian Championships, the Para-Alpine Canadian Championships, or the Ski Cross Canadian Championships. The majority of racers are Canadian, but international skiers can also compete.
