Brady Leman

Ski cross

A former alpine racer who switched to ski cross in 2008, Leman made a storybook return to competition in 2011-12 when he fought back from a series of serious injuries to win the season-opening World Cup race in Italy. The native of Calgary, Alta., who broke his leg three times before completing his comeback, suffered heartbreak at the 2010 Olympics when he was added to the Canadian team to replace an injured teammate, only to re-injure himself and be forced to withdraw from the Games. Leman has five career World Cup podiums and has been the top-ranked male Canadian racer for the past two seasons.

Nickname: My nickname is Wombat. During my first camp with the team (in Australia) we drove down to the valley to play some golf. We had been seeing dead wombats all over the road and there was one right on the shoulder so we stopped to check it out. My teammates thought I looked like it - the dead wombat - and the name stuck!

Best moment in skiing: My best moment in ski cross was winning a bronze medal at the 2010 X Games.

What one thing would you change about skiing? If I could change one thing, I would make it so that you don’t get hurt when you crash!

Best World Cup stop (and why): Blue Mountain! It’s in Canada and always has great crowds.

Person you look up to most in skiing: Thomas Grandi. He was the hardest working skier I have ever met, and had great success after years of grinding it out.

On your iPod: Country, hip-hop and some techno. Dean Brody is at the top of the most played list.

Favourite movie (and why): Fubar! It just never gets old!

Hockey team: Calgary Flames! Grew up cheering for them.

Something no-one knows about you: I have a cat and actually don’t mind it!

Favourite activities other than skiing: Tons of hobbies, toss up between motocross and golf

Superstitions: If I have a good race, I will wear the same long underwear in the next race.

If a movie was made about your life, who should play the lead role? Paul Walker

What’s a talent you wish you had? Speed healing

If you weren’t a skier what would you be? Played a lot of soccer growing up, would have tried to stick with that

Most embarrassing moment: Crashing and losing my ski in the Cypress (B.C.) World Cup in 2009

Describe yourself in three words: Determined, passionate, dedicated
